What is "Early Voting"?
“Early Voting” is a general term that indicates a time period in which voters can vote in person prior to the traditional Election Day. In New Jersey, Early Voting is being held for the first time using new voting equipment. State law requires “optical-scan voting machines that read hand-marked paper ballots or other voting machines that produce a voter-verifiable paper ballot.”
What is the significance? Early Voting locations will NOT have traditional older voting machines with touchscreens or buttons. This method did not allow voters to confirm their vote: it could not be verified upon exiting the voting booth.
The new voting process and equipment will allow voters to verify that their votes are correct. Voters will be given print-on-demand paper ballots to hand mark. These paper ballots will be fed through a ballot scanner that records the vote; voters will then be able to verify that their votes are correctly recorded.
All Early Voting locations will be open from October 29th to November 6th. The schedule of voting hours is: Monday – Saturday are 10am to 8pm and Sunday hours are 10 am to 6pm.
